Enter a lifetime price and a yearly price to find the year the lifetime plan pays for itself. Use one currency for both prices. Find real prices in our price database.
How this works
Year 1 costs the yearly price. Each later year adds your price rise. The break-even year is the first year when the yearly payments add up to the lifetime price or more. With a lifetime price of 500, a yearly price of 100 and a 3% rise, that is year 5, when the yearly payments total 530.91. Over 10 years they total 1,146.39.
The sum ignores interest on money you pay up front, refunds, tax, and any extra storage you may need later.
The risks a break-even year does not show
A lifetime plan lasts for the life of the product, the company, or the term its contract sets. It does not mean forever. Read the actual terms before you pay. Here is what three providers publish.
| Provider | What its terms say |
|---|---|
| pCloud | A lifetime plan runs for "the lifetime of the account owner or 99 years, whichever is shorter". The terms also say that if pCloud ceases operation, your account will be terminated. |
| Internxt | Validity runs "until the account holder reaches the age of ninety-nine (99) years". An account with no activity for more than 12 months may be reviewed. If you do not confirm use within 30 days, Internxt may close it, with no refund. |
| Icedrive | We found no stated length. Lifetime accounts inactive for 24 months may be treated as abandoned, and Icedrive says it may discontinue the services at any time. |
- You pay once, so you carry the risk. If the provider closes in year 3, a yearly customer has lost one year's payment at most. A lifetime customer has lost the whole price.
- Accounts usually cannot be passed on. pCloud and Internxt both say accounts are not transferable.
- The size is fixed. If you outgrow it, you pay again.
